May 8: National School Nurse Day

It is a day to recognize the many contributions that school nurses make to student health and learning.

FCPS appreciates the role of School Public Health Nurses (PHNs) for their contribution to the health and welfare of all our students. Professional school nurses support the needs of students through their delivery of healthcare, contributions to local school communities, and promotion of safety, prevention, and wellness throughout the year. They are advocates who bridge healthcare and education by supporting student health and readiness to learn. School nurses are essential to our community and work tirelessly to make a positive impact in the lives of their students.

Please join us in thanking the PHNs for their hard work and dedication to FCPS students.

Parent Input for Class Placement Form Open Again!

Your feedback is invaluable to us as we strive to create the best possible learning environment for your children. Therefore, we are excited to announce that the Parent Input for Class Placement Form is now open again!

This form allows you to provide valuable insights into your child's learning style, preferences, and any other information you believe will help us in making class placement decisions for the upcoming academic year.

A variety of factors such as student personalities, friendships, and academic abilities are considered as we create our new classes. Other factors impacting the decision-making process of student class assignments are new student enrollments and teachers moving to a new assignment.

Bull Run Elementary families may assist in this process by sharing insights. Please note the following when providing information. We do not accept requests for specific teachers for the upcoming grade placement. This includes hints that reference specific teachers. We cannot guarantee friend requests nor exceptions for other students whereby there may be a conflict. We do our best to create a positive learning year for your child.

New Submissions:

For parents who have not yet had the chance to provide input, we encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity to share your valuable insights about your child's learning style, preferences, and any other pertinent information.

Accessing the Form:

Please provide your input by submitting this BRES Family Input for Class Placements 2024/25 SY form as it will ensure we have your request.  Please do not email us additional information. Completion of the form is optional. The deadline for any correspondence is May 3 at 4 PM.

We deeply appreciate your collaboration and support in this process. If you have any questions or need assistance with the form, please don't hesitate to reach out to Mr. Jason Pensler at [email protected].

Thank you for being such integral members of our school community. Together, we can make the upcoming academic year a fantastic one for all our students!

🙋 Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow!

As we approach the end of the school year, it’s important for students to stay engaged, attend school, and finish strong! Visit our website for attendance resources

🖍️ It’s Kindergarten Registration Time!

Attending kindergarten provides children with an opportunity to learn and practice the essential social, emotional, problem-solving, and self-regulation skills they will use throughout their lives. Eligible children can also be registered throughout the summer, but registering your child early helps us plan, so that we have the teachers and resources needed on the first day of school.

We are happy to support families with registration and the transition to kindergarten. For more information in other languages, visit FCPS’ Kindergarten Registration webpage.

Dear Students, Staff, and Families of Bull Run Elementary,

It is with a mix of emotions that I write to inform you of my decision to retire from my role as educator in Fairfax County Public Schools and Principal of Bull Run Elementary, effective June 30, 2024. After 25 years serving Fairfax County Public Schools, 8 of those years championing for our wonderful community, the time has come for me to embark on a new chapter in my life.

Reflecting on my time here at Bull Run Elementary, I am filled with immense gratitude for the support, dedication, and warmth that I have experienced from each and every one of you. Your involvement in your children's education has made a significant difference in their academic and personal development. Thank you for entrusting us with the privilege of shaping the minds and hearts of your children.

As I bid farewell to Bull Run Elementary, I do so with a deep sense of appreciation and fondness for the memories we have shared together. While I will miss being a part of this vibrant community, I am excited about the opportunities that lie ahead.

April 22-30: Passover

Many Jewish communities in the United States celebrate Passover, a recognition of the deliverance of Jewish people from slavery in Egypt. Passover is also known as Pesah, Pesach, or the Feast of Unleavened Bread. Many Jewish families in the United States eat a ceremonial meal known as the Seder, which involves telling the story of the exodus from Egypt as well as eating various symbolic foods, such as meat of the paschal lamb and bitter herbs, recalling the harsh life of slavery. Learn more about Passover in NatGeo Kids

Monday, April 22, and Tuesday, April 23, are designated half-O days in recognition of the first two days of Passover. Half-O days are full school days, but important events will not be held after school on those days. See the complete school year calendar.

April 24: Theravada New Year

In countries where Theravada Buddhism is the most dominant religion, New Year is celebrated for three days from the first full moon in April. Theravada means “the teachings of the elders.” Celebrations begin with people attending the local temple in the morning for chanting and meditation. In the afternoon they have a water festival in which they meet the Buddha image and pay respect to the elderly by watering their hands together. Building sandcastles is also one of the most popular activities during this day of celebration.

Wednesday, April 24, is designated as an O day for Theravada New Year. The school calendar recognizes many religious and cultural observances (O days) during the school year. There is school on these days, however tests, quizzes, field trips, graduation, homecoming, or FCPS-scheduled athletic events will not be held on these observance days. See the complete school year calendar.

Year at a Glance... Curriculum by Content Area

As we embark on the final stretch of the academic year, I wanted to provide you with an overview of the curriculum that has been covered for the year and will be taught during the 4th quarter.

The objectives and outcomes for each unit are common across FCPS and based on the Virginia Standards of Learning. The pacing by quarter and by week provides an example of how the curriculum can be organized throughout the school year. Teacher teams may adjust the pacing or order of units to best meet the needs of our students.

Select your child's grade-level below. Once selected, scroll down to the bottom of the webpage and select the curriculum by content area (Health, Reading, Writing, Word Study, Mathematics/Advanced Mathematics, Science, Social Studies) you wish to view.

Throughout the year, we encourage open communication between teachers, students, and families to ensure a supportive learning environment. Please feel free to reach out to us with any questions, concerns, or feedback you may have. Together, we can make this quarter a rewarding and successful experience for all.

Thank you for your continued support and commitment to your child's education. Let's finish the year strong!

Warm Regards,

Jason Pensler
Principal

Dear BRES Families,

A rare and exciting astronomical phenomenon is happening this Monday, April 8: a solar eclipse. Students will have a chance to view the eclipse while at school; however, this requires important safety practices. Looking directly at the sun, even during an eclipse, can permanently damage your eyes. To ensure students and staff can safely view the solar eclipse at Bull Run Elementary, we have purchased approved eyewear (ISO 12312-2 approved glasses). Glasses will be delivered to students and staff Monday.

At approximately 2:45pm, starting with kindergarten, each grade level will line up and exit the building at Door 1 (main entrance), walk outside during our “viewing parade” along the sidewalk around the school, and enter the building at Door 4 (by the gymnasium). This 4-5 minute walk will provide our students with a wonderful opportunity to experience this astronomical phenomenon safely. Staff members will be positioned along the route to support our students. Additionally, we will be streaming the live NASA feed in all classrooms throughout the entire solar eclipse.

During dismissal, students will be reminded to wear their glasses. We will have staff members positioned at each doorway monitoring to ensure our students exit the building safely.

You are also welcome to check your child out early if you would like to view the solar eclipse with them. Please contact your child’s teacher and the office if you are planning to check your child out early.

Here are some important reminders:
  • Do not look at the sun without approved eyewear. We encourage you to reinforce this at home.
  • Regular sunglasses are not good enough. We will be providing eyewear that has been approved for viewing.
  • Eclipse timing: The eclipse starts around 2:04 p.m., peaks at 3:20 p.m., and ends around 4:32 p.m. If you have concerns about your child riding the bus home, please arrange for alternative transportation.

For more details, visit the FCPS Solar Eclipse webpage. Thank you for your continued support and partnership.

🏫 Advertised Budget Focuses on Schools and Instruction

Investing in excellence means putting our dollars where it matters most — schools and instruction. Nearly 93% of FCPS full-time staff work directly in our schools. And nearly 86% of FCPS’ Fiscal Year (FY) 2025 Advertised Budget is dedicated to instructional programs across all grade levels, including special education.

Only 5% of the advertised budget is for general support and central administration. Central office administrators represent only 0.8% of total full-time positions.

For more details on FCPS’ advertised budget, view budget documents, including the FY 2025 Budget Book.

Check out the Budget Calendar for important dates in the budget process as well as opportunities for the community to provide feedback.

These spaces are for individuals to engage in prayer, meditation, or silent reflection, inclusive of their religious or non-religious beliefs. Parents/caregivers must provide written permission for students requesting to miss instructional time on a regular basis. Families are encouraged to contact the principal/family liaison/their child’s teacher regarding accommodations. View Regulation 1502. Visit FCPS' Guidelines for Religious Activities webpage for more information.

☀️ Safely View the Total Solar Eclipse on April 8

A total solar eclipse will occur on Monday, April 8, and will be viewable, depending on weather, in Fairfax County. The eclipse will begin in our area around 2:04 p.m. and end around 4:32 p.m., with the maximum eclipse occurring around 3:20 p.m.

Because the timing overlaps with dismissal, it is crucial that students understand the importance of safe viewing practices. We encourage families to review these Solar Eclipse Resources, especially the eye safety information. We hope everyone takes the opportunity to learn more about this extraordinary natural phenomenon while prioritizing safe solar viewing.

Bull Run Elementary has purchased Solar Eclipse Glasses for each student and staff member that meet the requirements of ISO 12312-2:2015.  School Lunch Menu Options

🤧 Updated COVID Recommendations

In accordance with the updated Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) respiratory virus guidance, FCPS and the Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) have updated school COVID-19 recommendations.

The COVID-19 isolation period of five days is no longer recommended

New respiratory virus guidance applies to respiratory viral illnesses, including COVID-19, influenza, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Students who have symptoms of, test positive for, or have been diagnosed with a respiratory virus may return to school when the student is fever-free for 24 hours without fever reducing medication; AND the student’s symptoms have improved or resolved.

Students should follow additional precautions as outlined per the CDC upon resumption of normal activities.

Should I Send My Child to School?

Please refer to the chart on this attendance webpage if your child is experiencing symptoms or illnesses, and you are unsure if they should go to school.

Thank you for helping keep our students and staff healthy.

How We Help Your Child Learn to Read

Lexia is a computer-based program that supplements classroom instruction to help students develop literacy skills. It also provides teachers with data to identify students who need additional support and the ability to know which specific concepts and skills to prioritize.Attend a virtual information night on Tuesday, April 9, to learn more about Lexia and how FCPS is integrating it into the classroom to support student growth. Participants will also get tips for supporting their students at home. Integrating Lexia into the literacy curriculum aligns with the Virginia Literacy Act, FCPS’ Equitable Access to Literacy, and FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan Goal 3, which aims to have all students reading on level by the end of third grade.

Meditation and Silent Reflection Spaces

FCPS has developed Regulation 1502 to ensure all students and staff have reasonable accommodation and access to meditation and silent reflection spaces within the school division. The regulation provides guidance for schools on how to manage requests for silent reflection during instructional and non-instructional time, and for students to leave school for religious activities.

Kindergarten Orientation is April 25 @ 5:30-7:00 pm. Parent Input for the 2024-2025 School Year

As we begin planning for the upcoming school year, our staff collaborates regarding student placements.

Please provide your input by submitting this BRES Family Input for Class Placements 2024/25 SY form as it will ensure we have your request.  Please do not email us additional information. Completion of the form is optional. The deadline for any correspondence is March 23 at 4 PM.

Parent Input for the 2024-2025 School Year

As we begin planning for the upcoming school year, our staff collaborates regarding student placements.

Please provide your input by submitting this BRES Family Input for Class Placements 2024/25 SY form as it will ensure we have your request.  Please do not email us additional information. Completion of the form is optional. The deadline for any correspondence is March 23 at 4 PM.

Bipartisan Study Finds Virginia Public School Divisions Receive Less Funding per Student Than Other States

The School Board recently adopted FCPS’ FY 2025 Advertised Budget. Meeting budget needs becomes more of a challenge with underfunding by the state, using staffing formulas that continue to result in school districts not receiving the actual support needed for excellent public education. A staffing formula is the method for calculating the number of positions that need to be assigned to meet program needs.

Did You Know?

In July 2023, the Joint Legislative Audit and Review Commission (JLARC) released a study of Virginia’s K-12 funding formulas. The report found that Virginia school divisions receive less funding per student than the 50-state average, the regional average, and many of Virginia’s neighboring states including West Virginia, Maryland, and Kentucky. Learn more about the JLARC study. View FCPS’ budget development timeline

Contact your state officials to provide feedback on funding for K-12 education. Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow!

This year, spring break is March 25-29. We will be eager to welcome your children back to school on Wednesday, April 3, after two teacher work days. Student attendance is very important. Every day, our teachers will be teaching, and students will be learning. Studies have shown that just two absences per month can cause students to fall behind. Let’s finish this school year strong.

Visit FCPS’ website for attendance resources.

Women’s History and Disability Awareness Month

In March, people throughout the United States celebrate Women’s History Month and Disability Awareness Month. Both histories are foundational parts of American history. Students deserve meaningful, sustained opportunities to learn about the experiences and contributions of this history year-round. The celebration of Women’s History month and Disability Awareness month are opportunities to honor these diverse and important stories.

Read more about Women’s History Month in National Geographic Kids.

March 3-9: National School Social Work Week

Social workers in FCPS help to prevent social, emotional, and behavioral factors from affecting a student's ability to perform at their best. Their primary goal is to remove barriers that prevent a student from fulfilling their academic potential. Social workers are assigned to every school and center in the school system. Most social workers serve one to two sites. Learn more about the role of social workers in FCPS.

March 5: Presidential Primary

The Fairfax Board of Elections has requested that schools be closed on Tuesday, March 5, to accommodate the safe and efficient administration of the 2024 presidential primary election.

Therefore, March 5 will be a school holiday for students and a virtual School Planning Day. As outlined in Regulation 4421, School Planning Days are directed by school-based Administrators in order to devote time to school improvement efforts, including collaboration around data, common assessments, responsive instruction, etc.

Central offices and school offices will remain open. SACC will remain open, as on other professional work days.

March 10: Daylight Saving Begins (Spring Forward)

Sunday, March 10, at 2 a.m., daylight saving time begins. Don’t forget to move your clocks ahead one hour! As a result of the time change, many students will be walking to school or to bus stops in the dark. Help your child stay safe by having them wear reflective clothing and bright or light colors, or add reflective items to their backpacks or clothes. Also, encourage your child to be especially alert for cars that are turning or backing up and not to run into the street or cross between parked cars.

March 11: *First Full Day of Ramadan (O day)

This year, the first full day of Ramadan is Monday, March 11. In Islam, Ramadan is the most sacred month of the year. During this month Muslims abstain from food and drink from dawn to sunset each day while striving to increase their spirituality, through prayers, charity and good deeds. Read more about Ramadan in National Geographic Kids.

March 11 is an O day. The school calendar recognizes many religious and cultural observances (O days) during the school year. There is school on these days, however tests, quizzes, field trips, graduation, homecoming, or FCPS-scheduled athletic events will not be held on these observance days. Half-O days are full school days, but important events will not be held after school on those days. See the complete 2022-23 school year calendar.

Throughout the year, as we celebrate and recognize various cultural holidays and observances, families are encouraged to contact their student’s principal regarding accommodations, including but not limited to those around lunch, prayer/meditation and silent reflection spaces and times, and instruction.

FCPS Budget Do You Know Where FCPS Funding Comes From?

The majority of FCPS funding is requested from the Fairfax County government, which generates its revenue from real estate and personal property taxes. The Commonwealth of Virginia provides the next largest source of revenue to FCPS through state aid and sales tax. The rest of the funding comes from a variety of sources, including federal aid and tuition for non-county residents. (The numbers above represent the FY 2025 proposed school operating fund in millions.)

FCPS does not have the authority to impose taxes and may only charge fees where the Commonwealth of Virginia has granted specific authority. Learn more about FCPS’ FY 2025 Advertised Budget.

🎤 Join a Community Conversation on Fentanyl and Other Drugs

A community conversation addressing the opioid crisis within Northern Virginia and Fairfax County Public Schools will be held Wednesday, March 18, 6:30-8 p.m., in the auditorium at Lake Braddock Secondary School. Please enter through Door #14.

All attendees will receive a free REVIVE! Narcan training during the event and learn about support services currently available within FCPS and Fairfax County.

This discussion will provide families, staff, and students with valuable knowledge about the dangers of drugs and deadly fentanyl. The material discussed is suitable for students in grades 6-12. Together as a community, we aim to explore collaborative strategies to minimize the impact of these harmful and too-often fatal substances.

Language interpretation services are available as well as American Sign Language accommodation. Childcare and transportation will also be provided, as needed. Learn more about the event and register online.

It’s Kindergarten Registration Time!

Attending kindergarten provides children with an opportunity to learn and practice the essential social, emotional, problem-solving, and self-regulation skills they will use throughout their lives. Fairfax County public schools typically conduct kindergarten registration events—including orientation—in the Spring during March or April. Eligible children can also be registered throughout the summer, but registering your child early helps schools prepare and ensure they have the teachers and resources on hand that they need on the first day of school.

After determining which school their child will attend, families should prepare for registration by gathering documents and completing forms, details can be found on the FCPS kindergarten registration webpage. FCPS offers support and resources for all families to help with registration and the transition to kindergarten. For support in other languages, visit the kindergarten registration webpage.
