Principal's Message:

Hello Bull Run families!

As we approach the Thanksgiving holiday, I want to take a moment to express my gratitude for the Bull Run community.

I would like to extend my deepest thanks to each and every one of you for the warm welcome and ongoing support I have received as the new principal of Bull Run. It has truly been a privilege to be part of this community, and I am excited to continue on this journey together.

Since stepping into this role, we have worked together to create a positive and collaborative environment where both students and staff can thrive. I am proud of what we have accomplished so far, both academically and in the area of student behavior. It is a direct result of the hard work, commitment, and shared vision that each member of our school community has brought to the table.

As many know, there have been some instructional changes that our staff have had to navigate, on top of their already huge task of being a classroom teacher.  Being a teacher is hard work, and has its challenges daily.  However, our staff show up for their students, remaining passionate and dedicated to their important work.  It is important that they feel supported and appreciated.  If you haven't already, please take a moment to thank your child's teachers.

We invite you to submit on FCPS Cares, so we can all share and acknowledge the positive impact work of our Bull Run staff.

Wishing you all a joyful and restful Thanksgiving holiday!  I will be traveling to New York to spend the holiday with my wife's family.  For those sharing in the traffic with me, I wish we all have the best of luck and safe travels!

Monday, December 9th is our next 3-hour early dismissal at 1:00 pm at Bull Run Elementary.

We will plan to use the information based upon the previously completed early dismissal Monday, but if there is a change in transportation plans or you are planning to have your student go home at 1:00pm instead, please let me and/or your child's teacher know as soon as possible.   Thank you for your understanding.

Additional information can be found on the FCPS  Early Release Mondays webpage.

Reminders:

Tomorrow is Bull Run Spirit Friday!  Spirit wear is encouraged and or wear your blue and white.

Also, don't forget that there is no school on Wednesday, 11/27, through Friday, 11/29, for Thanksgiving Break.  The office will be closed, and classes will resume on Monday, December 2nd.

There won't be a traditional 'Bulls Bulletin' sent out next Thursday due to the short week.

Have a great long weekend!

Sixth grade band students within the Centreville pyramid were invited to Liberty Middle School to attend a special performance opportunity on the evening of November 15. This event offered a chance for students to get a taste of what band class at Liberty will be like. Over 90 sixth grade students had the opportunity to work with the Band Director, Mr. Joe LaBrie, as well as other FCPS instructors. Along with instrument-specific musical instruction the students also rehearsed together as a full band to experience how band classes are taught at Liberty. Current Liberty and Centreville HS students were also helping at the event to inspire and support the next generation of Wildcat Band musicians. At the end of the night, students performed a wonderful concert for their parents, after only a few hours of practice. It was a great evening of music making! Boundary Review Community Meetings Start This Month

As a reminder, FCPS has started the process of reviewing school boundaries across the division. This important work will help the district better support student population growth, changes in school capacity, and evolving community needs. Community input is vital to this process. With that in mind, FCPS, in partnership with Thru Consulting, will be hosting a series of community meetings in each of FCPS’ six regions. Participants are encouraged to share their thoughts, ask questions, and learn more about the boundary review process.

Tuesday, December 3, 6:30-8 p.m., at Lake Braddock Secondary School Cafeteria. (REGION 4)

Please register in advance by clicking on the date above. Language interpretation will be available.

Please visit FCPS’ website for other meeting dates, locations, and other information. Sign up for the School Boundary Review newsletter for updates.

Services for Hearing-Impaired and Visually-Impaired Students

Students with sensory disabilities require specialized services and support to access instruction that is typically presented visually and auditorily (by means of hearing). FCPS provides educational services to students who are deaf, hearing-impaired, or visually impaired. They are supported in various settings, including at their school or through itinerant specialists who travel to different schools to work with students, rather than being based in a single school. Learn more about Services for Students Who Are Deaf or Hard of Hearing and Services for Students Who Are Blind or Visually Impaired.

Visit the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) website for Resources for Serving Students with Sensory Disabilities.

National Family Engagement Month

This month reminds us that families are children's first and most important teachers, advocates, and nurturers. Strong family support is vital to student well-being and success.

FCPS has many resources designed to increase engagement and partnerships with families while fostering academic success and social-emotional growth.

Additionally, every school has a family liaison who will welcome and orient families, and help them understand the school's culture, policies, procedures, and practices. They can help connect families to resources in the community. Family liaisons might also assist a family in transitioning to a new school and encourage family-school partnerships to help ensure their student's success and healthy development.

If you have questions or would like more information, ask your school office to connect you with your family liaison or visit FCPS’ website for a list of region representatives.

Principal's Message:

Hello Bull Run families!

We have started the second quarter STRONG!

I wanted to take a moment and provide you with you some positive data for our school.  Transparency is one of the values that I value most, and as school-wide data becomes available, I intend to share with our community throughout the year.

As you all heard and saw by now, there was a push to make sure your child is up to date on the immunizations required by the state of Virginia. Thank you for supporting this important health initiative. We are now 100% compliant!

Having all students attend school regularly is so important to their overall growth.  Students are more likely to perform well in reading and math, develop strong social and emotional skills, and graduate from high school on time. At the end of last school year, Bull Run finished having a rate of 14.6% chronic absenteeism for students.  This means that we had 14.6% of our students missing 10% or more of school days in the year.  Our data indicates shows that we are expected to drop below the 10% mark-- which is one of our school's strategic goals. This is AMAZING if we can accomplish this!  We can attribute this success to many things we are doing proactively, but we are doing it all as a team; taking collective responsibility, and that is the most important reason. This includes all our families' dedication to their children's education. To continue our work and support this goal, I will be adding positive reinforcement to celebrate progress.  All students who were not considered chronically absent (having 4 or less days absent) in the first quarter will be receiving certificates shortly.  For each remaining quarter, students that meet the absenteeism criteria will get certificates as well as a celebration with their families invited to participate.  This second quarter's prize will be a group popsicle party!

As I mentioned in previous newsletters, our teachers have been hard at work teaching with the new Language Arts curriculum, and we are excited to help all of our students become strong readers and writers! This year we also have new assessments, which is how we check if your student needs extra help with reading and writing, and new Standards of Learning (SOLs).

Because of these changes, we are now teaching all of the Language Arts skills your child needs to know (and checking if they need extra help) throughout the whole school year, instead of different skills each quarter. While these skills will be new to your child in the beginning of the year, the goal is for your child to grow strong in all of their new skills by the end of the year.

You should have all received your children's report cards yesterday, and you may have noticed that it might look a little different than in the past. You can also find more information on FCPS’ Grading and Reporting webpage.

Reminder: Tomorrow is Bull Run Spirit Friday!  Spirit wear is encouraged and welcome or wear your blue and white

Have a great weekend!

-Mr. Marotta

Science Olympiad

This past weekend, we had 40 students ranging from grades 3rd through 5th participate in the Science Olympiad competition, which took place at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology. This was our first time competing since the 2015-2016 school year.

Our school placed nine (9) different times in seven (7) different events. Events tasked students to complete various station activities that tested their knowledge in a designated area of science or put their understanding of the engineering process into practice by constructing various devices with limited materials.  Station events included VA Ecosystems, Forestry, Paleontology, Astronomy, Anatomy, and States of Matter. Building events included Origami Glider, Ping Pong Parachute, Straw Egg Drop, Tower and Barge Building.

The team spent the entire day outside practicing and preparing for their events that took place inside the building. They represented Bull Run exceptionally well not only with #ChargerSTRONG behavior throughout the day, but wonderful sportsmanship towards the other teams competing.  Go BULLS!

Federal Impact Aid Survey

Return Your Federal Impact Aid Survey

FCPS is asking all families to fill out a Federal Impact Aid Survey. The form is available online in SIS ParentVUE. If you have not already filled out the form online, we will provide paper forms in November. Please be sure to return them by Friday, November 17

Completing this form for each school-aged child in every household is important, because information from this survey resulted in more than $4 million in funding last year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.

Please watch this video and visit the Federal Impact Aid Survey page for more information.

Need to Register for ParentVUE?

Learn how to activate your SIS ParentVUE account, so you can easily submit your survey.

Technical support for using ParentVUE or completing the survey online is available by submitting a Parent Support Request ticket. Principal's Message:

Hello Bull Run families!

It was a short week, but loaded with engaging learning opportunities for our students!  The children got to learn and participate in a variety of activities focused on Election Day and Veterans Day, in addition to continuing their Language Arts and Math curriculum.

On Wednesday night, Mrs. Campbell and I were able to attend the Centreville Pyramid Chorus Concert where our Bulls did an amazing job under the direction of BRES' music teachers, Mrs. Lynskey and Mrs. Butler-Noel.  We were so proud of the students!

Tomorrow we are so excited to honor our Veterans. To all the veterans we want to say thank you. Thank you for your service, your bravery, and your dedication to our country. We are deeply grateful for all you have done for us.

I know many of you have already met with your child's teacher for conferences.  If you haven't already, please schedule one with their teacher.  It is an important part of being an active participant in your child's learning journey.  Your child’s teacher will give you more information on the new progress reporting and how we’re making sure your child is getting any extra help they might need. You can also find more information on FCPS’ Grading and Reporting webpage.  Report cards will go home on Wednesday, November 13.

Reminder: There is no school this Monday, November 11, in honor of Veterans Day.

Have a great long weekend!

Select SISParent in the Application dropdown menu and type Federal Impact Aid Survey under Issue Description. Or, call the Parent Technology Help Desk at 833-921-3277 (833-921-FCPS).

Please visit FCPS’ website for meeting dates, locations, and other information. Sign up for the School Boundary Review newsletter for updates.

IEP Palooza and Community Resource FairParents/caregivers, school staff, and students over the age of 14 are invited to attend an interactive event celebrating the individualized education program (IEP) process. The IEP Palooza and Community Resource Fair will take place on Saturday, November 16, 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m., at Jackson Middle School.

Attendance Matters

Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow! The beginning of the school year is the best time to develop strong attendance habits! Students who attend school regularly are more likely to perform well in reading and math, develop strong social and emotional skills, and graduate from high school on time. Help prepare your child for future success. Visit FCPS’ Attendance web page for tips and strategies
