In this first unit, students extend their understanding of the base-ten numeration system and place-value concepts and apply that knowledge to multidigit addition and subtraction. Students build on their knowledge of two- and three-digit numbers and explore how those understandings extend to four-digit numbers. Students continue to build meaning for addition and subtraction through problem solving and an exploration of properties of addition

- MTH.3.1.a Read, write, and identify the place and value of each digit in a four-digit whole number, with and without models.
- MTH.3.1.b Round whole numbers, 999 or less, to the nearest ten and hundred.
- MTH.3.1.c Compare and order whole numbers, each 999 or less.
- MTH.3.3.a Estimate and determine the sum or difference of two whole numbers.
- MTH.3.3.b Create and solve single-step and multistep practical problems involving sums or differences of two whole numbers, each 999 or less.
