First Grade Unit 1: Counting and Numbers
Unit 1 - Counting and Numbers
Content Emphasis/ Big Ideas
In this unit, students count objects and write numerals up to 100. Students also explore counting backward from 30 and reason about the magnitude of one- and two-digit quantities. While working on these counting skills, students are asked to describe the patterns they notice in our number system.
Standards:
- Count forward orally by ones to 100, starting at any number between 0 and 100
- Write the numerals 0 to 100 in sequence and out-of-sequence
- Count backward orally by ones from 30
- Count forward orally by ones, fives, and tens to determine the total number of objects to 100
- Given up to 100 objects, compare two numbers between 0 and 100 represented pictorially or with concrete objects, using the words greater than, less than or equal to
- Given up to 100 objects, order three or fewer sets from least to greatest and greatest to least
- Given an ordered set of ten objects and/or pictures, will indicate the ordinal position of each object, first through tenth
- Given a familiar problem situation involving magnitude, select a reasonable order of magnitude from two given quantities: a one-digit numeral and a two-digit numeral (e.g., 5, 50)
- Given a familiar problem situation involving magnitude explain the reasonableness of the choice
- Identify, describe, extend, create and transfer growing and repeating patterns
