Grade 2 Unit 4 Measurement

Unit 4 - Measurement

Content Emphasis/ Big Ideas

In this unit, students explore the standard units for measuring length, weight/mass and volume.  Students learn why we use standard units of measurement, how to select an appropriate unit of measure, and what tools to use based upon the attribute being measured. Students also practice telling time to the nearest 5 minutes using digital and analog clocks. Because this is the first time students use standard units of measure, a great deal of vocabulary is introduced in this unit.

Standards:

  • 2.MG.1 The student will reason mathematically using standard units (U.S. Customary) with appropriate tools to estimate, measure, and compare objects by length, weight, and liquid volume to the nearest whole unit.

  • 2.MG.2 The student will demonstrate an understanding of the concept of time to the nearest five minutes, using analog and digital clocks.
