Grade 5 Math Unit 8 Geometry
Unit 8 Geometry
Content Emphasis/ Big Ideas
Students explore plane figures and their attributes. Students learn how to measure and classify angles. Generalizations are made about attributes such as angles, sides, and diagonals in order to derive definitions for various plane figures. Subsequently, these same attributes are used to classify and name various plane figures, such as triangles. Students explore transformations and congruency as well as investigate the combination and subdivision of polygons. Additionally, students investigate circles and the relationships between its parts (radius, chord, etc.).
Standards:
- MTH.G5.10 Identify and describe the diameter, radius, chord, and circumference of a circle.
- MTH.G5.12 Classify and measure right, acute, obtuse, and straight angles. MTH.G5.13.a Classify triangles as right, acute, or obtuse and equilateral, scalene, or isosceles.
- MTH.G5.13.b Investigate the sum of the interior angles in a triangle and determine an unknown angle measure.
- MTH.G5.14.a Recognize and apply transformations, such as translation, reflection, and rotation.
- MTH.G5.14.b Investigate and describe the results of combining and subdividing polygons.
