Content Emphasis/ Big Ideas

In this unit, students derive and use formulas to find the perimeter of polygons, the area of squares, rectangles, and right triangles, and the volume of rectangular prisms using manipulatives. They solve practical problems that involve area, perimeter and volume and justify which attribute is most appropriate for a given situation. Students also explore equivalent measurements within the metric system. In addition, they learn strategies to determine elapsed time.

  • MTH.G5.8.a Solve practical problems that involve perimeter, area and volume in standard units of measure  
  • MTH.G5.8.b Differentiate among perimeter, area, and volume and identify whether the application of the concept of perimeter, area or volume is appropriate for a given situation
  • MTH.G5.9.a Given the equivalent measure of one unit, identify equivalent measurements within the metric system
  • MTH.G5.9.b Solve practical problems involving length, mass, and liquid volume using metric units  
  • MTH.G5.11 Solve practical problems related to elapsed time in hours and minutes within a 24-hour period
