Grade 4 Unit 9 Measurement
Unit 9 Measurement
Content Emphasis/ Big Ideas
In this unit, students measure various attributes using both the U.S. Customary system and the metric system. They explore equivalent measurements within the U.S. Customary system as well as solve problems involving measurement. This unit offers students multiple opportunities to connect prior understandings (e.g., multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, base ten relationships) to real life situations through measurement. Being a “Throughout the Year” standard, elapsed time can now be formally assessed in this unit.
Standards:
- MTH.4.7 Solve practical problems that involve determining perimeter and area in U.S. Customary and metric units.
- MTH.4.8.a Estimate and measure length and describe the result in U.S. Customary and metric units.
- MTH.4.8.b Estimate and measure weight/mass and describe the result in U.S. Customary and metric units.
- MTH.4.8.c Given the equivalent measure of one unit, identify equivalent measures of length, weight/mass, and liquid volume between units within the U.S. Customary system.
- MTH.4.8.d Solve practical problems that involve length, weight/mass, and liquid volume in U.S. Customary units.
- MTH.4.9 Solve practical problems related to elapsed time in hours and minutes within a 12-hour period.
