Content Emphasis/ Big Ideas

In this unit, students continue to build ideas about the composition of numbers and the meanings of addition and subtraction. This unit incorporates story problems so that students develop a variety of problem-solving strategies and focus on building conceptual understanding of adding and subtracting two-digit numbers. Equality and the commutative property are reviewed within the problem-solving lessons. Estimation is embedded throughout the unit. Students have multiple opportunities to refine their estimation strategies and consider the reasonableness of their computation solutions.
