Unit 3 Geometry
Content Emphasis/ Big Ideas
In this unit, students work with plane geometric figures. They sort and classify objects and shapes and learn to identify shapes with given characteristics. Students find these shapes on the faces or surfaces of objects in their environment. This unit also provides an opportunity for students to extend their study of patterns to patterns using geometric figures.
Standards:
- Identify, trace, describe, and sort plane geometric figures (triangles, squares, rectangles, and circles) according to number of sides, vertices, and angles
- Identify and describe representations of circles, squares, rectangles, and triangles in different environments, regardless of orientation, and explain reasoning
- Sort and classify concrete objects according to one or two attributes
- Identify, describe, extend, create and transfer growing and repeating patterns (geometric patterns)
