Grade 4 Unit 1 Data, Statistics, and Probability

Unit 1 - Data, Statistics, and Probability

Content Emphasis/ Big Ideas

Students study bar graphs and line graphs, making comparisons between data displayed in these different forms. They determine the probability of events and represent probability as a numerical value on a number line. They graph the results of various probability experiments and use those graphs to make predictions.

Standards:

  • MTH.4.13.a Determine the likelihood of an outcome of a simple event. (PRS 5)
  • MTH.4.13.b Represent probability as a number between 0 and 1, inclusive. (PRS 5)
  • MTH.4.13.c Create a model or practical problem to represent a given probability. (PRS 5)
  • MTH.4.14.a Collect, organize, and represent data in bar graphs and line graphs. (PRS 5)
  • MTH.4.14.b Interpret data represented in bar graphs and line graphs. (PRS 5)
  • MTH.4.14.c Compare two different representations of the same data (e.g., a set of data displayed on a chart and a bar graph, a chart and a line graph, or a pictograph and a bar graph). (PRS 5)

Skills:

  1. Determining Likelihood and Representing Probability as a Number
  2. Collecting and Organizating Data in Bar and Line Graphs

Hands On Math At Home

Collect and graph data around you: colored foods (M&Ms, skittles, fruit loops), types of vehicles in parking lots, sock colors in the drawer, etc.

Use data to determine probabilities and likelihood-what is the probability of pulling red skittle?
