Unit 3 - Numeracy (Numbers 0-10)


Content Emphasis/ Big Ideas

Students should be able to read, write, and quantify numbers in the range of 10.  They should be able to name the number that comes before and after each number in this range.  They should be able to count and make sets of any given number in this range.

Standards:

  • K.NS.1 The student will utilize flexible counting strategies to determine and describe quantities up to 10.

Counting Forward to 10

Practice Items

  1. Use sidewalk chalk to write numbers forwards and backwards
  2. Do a family workout counting to different numbers: 10 jumping jacks, 12 pushups, 6 situps, etc.
  3. Count the windows, doorknobs, beds, chairs, stairs in your home.
  4.  Have your family sit in a circle and practice counting forward and backwards. Each person gets a turn saying a number.
  5. Count the number of snacks in your bag.
  6. Play “Tweet Tweet Feet Feet,” - Have your child stand away from you. Tell them to take 11 steps forward, then 5 steps back, 8 steps forward, 9 steps back, etc. When they reach you, they win. Make sure they count forward and backward for you to hear. 
  7. Set a timer on your phone and have them count backwards with the timer.
  8. Ball up a piece of paper and have them throw it into a trashcan and count how many times they score.
  9. Use shaving cream or whipped cream and practice writing numbers on the table or on a plate.
  10. Count how many cars you see in a driveway/forks in the dishwasher/kids on the playground/handful of legos/flowers in a pot and ask what number comes before and after.
