Grade 5: Decimal & Fraction Number Sense of Number

Unit 4 - Decimal & Fraction Number Sense

Content Emphasis/ Big Ideas

In this unit, students further investigate many concepts introduced in fourth grade, deepening their understanding of fractions and decimals. Emphasis is placed on the use of models and benchmark values (e.g., 0, 1 2 , and 1) to assist students in comparing, rounding, and ordering values. Students develop flexibility in moving between fraction and decimal models and fluency with fraction and decimal notation. This supports the development of rational number sense. Strong number sense will improve their ability to compute efficiently with rational numbers in later units.

Standards:

5.NS.1 The student will use reasoning and justification to identify and represent equivalency between fractions (with denominators that are thirds, eighths, and factors of 100) and decimals; and compare and order sets of fractions (proper, improper, and/or mixed numbers having denominators of 12 or less) and decimals (through thousandths).

Skills:

  1. Round decimal to nearest whole number, tenth or hundredth
  2. Name fraction & decimal equivalents
  3. Compare & order fractions, mixed numbers and decimals
