Grade 5: Unit 2: Algebraic Thinking & Characteristics of Number
Unit 2: Algebraic Thinking & Characteristics of Number
How does the content emphasis come to life in this unit?
In this unit, students investigate various attributes of numbers (i.e., prime, composite, even, and odd). An emphasis is placed on teaching these ideas conceptually, allowing students to develop their own understandings through the manipulation of concrete tools and by creating visual representations. Students also explore the language of algebra as they learn the meaning of a variable and apply this understanding to the translation of patterns, models, and story contexts to algebraic expressions and equations. Students use tables, words and symbols to describe and express relationships found in number patterns as well as use concrete materials, pictures and tables to identify, describe, and extend numerical patterns.
Standards:
5.CE.4 The student will simplify numerical expressions with whole numbers using the order of operations.
5.NS.2 The student will demonstrate an understanding of prime and composite numbers, and determine the prime factorization of a whole number up to 100.
5.PFA.1 The student will identify, describe, extend, and create increasing and decreasing patterns with whole numbers, fractions, and decimals, including those in context, using various representations.
5.PFA.2 The student will investigate and use variables in contextual problems.
