Gr 6 Unit 1 Building Community Through the Data Cycle

Unit 1 Building Community Through the Data Cycle

Content Emphasis/ Big Ideas

In this unit, students work with measures of center to determine how changes in the data affect the mean, median, and mode. Students then learn how to use a line plot to describe mean as a balance point. Previous knowledge of other types of data representations may be revisited in this unit (i.e., bar graphs, line plots, line graphs, and pictographs) by comparing representations of the same data.

Standards:

  • 6.PS.1 The student will apply the data cycle (formulate questions; collect or acquire data; organize and represent data; and analyze data and communicate results).
  • 6.PS.2 The student will represent the mean as a balance point and determine the effect on statistical measures when a data point is added, removed, or changed.

Skills:

  1. Comparing Data
  2. Mean, Median, Mode, and Range
