Grade 4 Unit 3 Fractions Part 1
Unit 3 Fractions Part 1
Content Emphasis/ Big Ideas
In this unit, students deepen their understanding of fractions. Students use models and benchmarks ( 0, half , and 1) to compare and order fractions. They develop fluency with fraction models and notation. This supports the development of rational number sense. They will represent the division of two whole numbers as a fraction given a contextual situation and a model (e.g., 3 5 means the same as 3 divided by 5 or 3/5 represents the amount of muffin each of five children will receive when sharing three muffins equally). Strong number sense will improve students’ ability to compute efficiently with rational numbers in later units.
Standards:
4.NS.3 The student will use mathematical reasoning and justification to represent, compare, and order fractions (proper, improper, and mixed numbers with denominators 12 or less), with and without models.
