Grade 2 Math Unit 1 Building Community Through The Data Cycle

Unit 1 - Building Community Through The Data Cycle

Content Emphasis/ Big Ideas

In this unit, students will build community by gathering data with beginning of the year routines and activities (weather graphs, transportation graphs, lunch graphs, get to know you activities, exploring manipulatives).  The focus is not to teach standards explicitly but to spend time building routines and exploring manipulatives. The standards in this unit (skip counting by 2s and passage of time) should be connected and will be explored in the context of the data cycle.

Standards:

  • 2.PS.1 The student will apply the data cycle (pose questions; collect or acquire data; organize and represent data; and analyze data and communicate results) with a focus on pictographs and bar graphs. (only pictographs in this unit)

  • 2.NS.1 The student will utilize flexible counting strategies to determine and describe quantities up to 200.  Count forward back by 2’s, 5’s and 10’s.
