Content Emphasis/ Big Ideas
In this unit, students continue to build and extend their ideas about the composition of numbers and the meanings of addition and subtraction from unit 4. This unit incorporates story problems so that students develop a variety of problem-solving strategies and share their strategies verbally and in written form. The use of the equal sign (=) and not equal sign (≠) are utilities within student strategy notations. Estimation is embedded throughout the unit. Students have multiple opportunities to refine their estimation strategies and consider the reasonableness of their computation solutions.
